Are you interested in using open educational resources (OER) to create competency-based education (CBE) programs for development education? Learn about Lord Fairfax Community College’s strategies for meeting soft skills, adult basic education, and developmental education needs using OER resources in its Knowledge to Work portal, and hear about the latest research on CBE for developmental education.

Description

Community and technical institutions are using multiple strategies to accelerate learning and encourage completion. Those strategies include CBE, which allows students to learn at their own pace; OER, which saves money and time; and online training, which offers flexibility for students. Lord Fairfax Community College, located in Virginia, is combining all three to offer soft skills, developmental education, and occupational training for career pathways in healthcare, information technology, and manufacturing through its Knowledge to Work portal. The portal, which will be demonstrated in the webinar, uses nationally-recognized competency frameworks mapped to instructional content. You will also learn about other OER resources for developmental education on SkillsCommons. In addition, Jobs for the Future will present the latest research and approaches to delivering developmental education on a national level.

This webinar is part of a webinar series showcasing strategies and resources developed by community colleges that are of broad interest to educational institutions engaged in career-focused education and training. Topics of upcoming webinars will include affordable learning solutions, sustaining innovation, and free resources for apprenticeship and work-based learning; previous topics (available as recordings) explored making industry experts into expert instructors to increase student success, and scaling career pathways in Wisconsin. The Knowledge to Work portal and the many resources available on SkillsCommons were produced by grantees of the Trade Adjustment Assistance Community College and Career Training (TAACCCT) program, a grant program funded by the U.S. Department of Labor in partnership with the U.S. Department of Education.
