Are you an institution interested in preparing your industry experts to become excellent teachers? Join SkillsCommons, the world’s largest open library of workforce training materials, for a deeper dive into the Industry Expert to Expert Instructor (IE2EI) IMPACT Community. Participants will gain tools designed to help skilled industry professionals transition to the world of higher education and upscale their own instructional strategies.

Description

Ensuring that faculty with industry expertise also have the teaching skills needed to impact student success is vital for community colleges and others engaged in career and technical training. Colleges can achieve this by equipping their industry experts with professional development to launch their careers as instructors. USC-MERLOT’s SkillsCommons’ Jumpstart to Successful Instruction: IE2EI course provides free, modularized, faculty development materials that can be viewed by individuals, imported into a college’s learning management system, added as a supplement to an existing faculty development plan, or used in face-to-face professional development classes. In this webinar, participants will become familiar with the content available on IE2EI and learn how its interactive modules focus on essential teaching skills, which can help reduce anxiety for instructors facing students for the first time.  Topics covered will include how to prepare for the first day of class, what consistent communication skills can look like between instructors and students, how to write an effective syllabus, and the ins and outs of fair and balanced assessment.

The SkillsCommons’ IE2EI IMPACTcommunity is led by members who together have over 75 years of experience in post-secondary instruction, instructional design, and administration. The resources that this community develops target industry experts newly employed at community and technical colleges and instructors looking to refresh their skills in delivery of instruction methodology.

This webinar is part of the Innovations Leading to Career Success Webinar Series, which showcases strategies and resources developed by community colleges that are of broad interest to educational institutions engaged in career-focused education and training. Topics of upcoming webinars will include building education/employer partnerships, developing sustainable student support systems, employer engagement and more. The colleges that will be featured in this webinar and throughout the series are grantees of the Trade Adjustment Assistance Community College and Career Training (TAACCCT) program, a collaboration between the U.S. Department of Labor and the U.S. Department of Education.
